“Freistunde”: Explaining the World to Kids

This is a series of hand-drawn explainer episodes for Freistunde, ORF’s daily show for children aged 6 to 10. Across many episodes and topics, drawings, animation, and infographics turn complex subjects into short, friendly stories that kids can easily follow and remember.

The Challenge: Explaining difficult and sensitive topics, including sex education, to young children in a way that is honest, age-appropriate, and engaging.
My Role: I led the episodes from concept to final animation, directing the creative approach, illustrating, animating, and managing the production in close collaboration with the editorial team.
The Approach: A personal, hand-drawn style combined with humor and warmth, so even sensitive subjects felt safe, approachable, and easy to talk about.
The Result: The sex-education episodes “F***ing Complicated” won the 2020 Design & Journalism Award.

Role: Concept, Art Direction, Creative Lead, Illustration, Motion Design, Infographics, Graphic Design, Typography, Project Management
Award: Design & Journalism Award 2020, winner, for “F***ing Complicated”
Client: ORF, Austria’s national public broadcaster
